Use the Holiday Calendar to Pick Your Dates

Under Proclamation No. 1006, Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24) and December 31 are special non-working days, while Christmas Day (Friday, December 25) and Rizal Day (Wednesday, December 30) are regular holidays. New Year’s Day 2027 lands on a Friday.

Do the math, and it gets interesting. File leave for just Monday and Tuesday, December 28 and 29, and you’re off from December 24 to January 3. That’s 11 days for two leave credits. One catch: special non-working days follow “no work, no pay” unless your employer has a more favorable policy, so check yours first.

Those long weekends are where demand for Christmas flights bunches up. My guess is the priciest departures land just before December 24 and the priciest returns around January 2 and 3, but I haven’t found published Philippine day-by-day fare data to prove it. Jet fuel averaged $163.87 a barrel as of August 21, up 13 percent in a month, according to IATA figures reported by The Manila Times. Waiting for a dip is a bet, and this year the odds look worse than usual to me.

My rule: start tracking now, set a price ceiling, and buy when a fare fits it, even if that’s before the window opens.
