Okinawa Guide 2026: Best Beaches, Resorts & Snorkeling

Okinawa is the part of Japan where you pack reef shoes instead of a rail pass. This Okinawa Island Guide 2026 covers the best beaches in Okinawa, the Okinawa resorts worth booking, and the Okinawa snorkeling tours that show you why the water here has its own shade of blue. I checked ferry fares, swim seasons, new hotel openings, and Filipino visa rules in October 2026, so the numbers below are current as of this month.

If you’re flying in from Manila or Cebu, the trip fits a long weekend. The decisions don’t. Do you base yourself on the main island, make a Kerama day trip, or fly on to Miyako? Here’s how I’d sort it out.

Okinawa Island Guide 2026: Which part of Okinawa should you visit?

Okinawa Island, also called Okinawa Honto, is the main island and the place you land. Naha has the airport, the monorail, and Tomari Port, where the Kerama ferries leave. Up north, Churaumi Aquarium and Emerald Beach sit about two hours from Naha Airport by car. Most of the big beach resorts are strung along the Onna and Nago coasts in between.

The Kerama Islands day trip is the usual Okinawa snorkeling tour: a ferry ride west of Naha. Miyako and the Yaeyama group (Ishigaki, Hateruma) are separate islands. You reach them by a domestic flight from Naha, and Hateruma’s Nishihama Beach needs a flight to Ishigaki first and more travel after that.

My rule of thumb: with four or five days, stay on the main island and add one Kerama day. With a week, add Miyako or Ishigaki instead of squeezing in everything. Too many ferries and flights eat your beach time.

Getting there from the Philippines: flights and visa

Flights first, with a caveat. Sources disagree on whether a nonstop Manila to Naha flight is currently sold. Some booking sites list Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific as nonstop carriers, while others show only itineraries with a stop. Check live schedules before you build a trip around it. I’m not quoting fares because they move daily, so compare Skyscanner, Trip.com, and the airline sites for your dates.

The visa is the part to verify. Filipino passport holders need a Japan tourist visa. The Embassy of Japan in Manila confirmed that the temporary visitor visa (up to 90 days) for Philippine nationals stays free, even though Japan raised its general visa fees on July 1, 2026. Since May 15, 2026, travelers on organized package tours booked through designated agencies can apply online through the eVisa. Independent travelers still file through the Japan Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global, where service fees may apply. Confirm on the embassy website before paying for anything non-refundable.

Best time to visit Okinawa for beaches and snorkeling

PeriodWeather and waterWhat it means for you
April to JuneBeaches open in April; the rainy season arrives around late May and June.Good snorkeling, packed for showers.
July to SeptemberHottest and busiest; typhoon risk peaks in August and September.Best swimming, highest disruption risk
October to early NovemberTyphoon risk is fading; some beaches are closed for the season.Fewer crowds, shorter swim windows
December to MarchWater drops to roughly 20 to 21°C.Too cool for casual swimming; whale-watching season

Emerald Beach lists its 2026 swim season as April 1 to October 31, so a trip this month is one of the last chances this year. Typhoons can ground flights and ferries for a day or two, so leave one spare day in the itinerary.

Of all the best beaches on Okinawa’s main island, my pick is Emerald Beach. It’s easy; it’s beside Churaumi Aquarium (adult tickets are 2,180 yen on the official site), and you can combine them in a single day. For the clearest water, though, Kerama wins.

Jellyfish season runs through summer into early autumn. Swim inside the netted areas, and read the posted beach signs before you get in.

Best Okinawa resorts to book

The Okinawa resorts that kept coming up in my research cluster along the Onna coast, with more near Nago in the north:

  • Halekulani Okinawa (Onna): The luxury pick, inside Kaigan Quasi-National Park.
  • Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island (Onna): Sits on its own small island connected by a bridge and is the value pick if you collect Hyatt points.
  • ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort (Onna): Right on Manza Beach.
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa (Nago): A hilltop property beside a golf course, with a private beach.
  • Orion Motobu Resort & Spa: Beside Emerald Beach, so it works well for an aquarium-first trip.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Okinawa Resort (Nago, new): Opened June 15, 2026, along Kise Beach with 170 rooms, about an hour’s drive from Naha Airport.
  • BLISSTIA Suites & Resort Okinawa Onna Village (new): A condominium-style resort that opened July 15, 2026.

For ballparks, one-third-party roundup puts entry rates around US$250 a night at Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island, US$350 at the Ritz-Carlton, and US$500 at Halekulani. Treat those as rough starting points and check live rates for your dates. My view: unless you want a resort day, a mid-range hotel near Naha or Chatan, and a rental car or tour, you get more beach for less money.

Compare rates for Okinawa resorts in Onna and Nago before you commit.

Operators advertise turtle sighting odds of 90 percent or more. Treat any percentage as marketing. One operator’s own tour page says sightings can’t be guaranteed, because turtles are wild animals. Keep your distance, never touch them, and give them room to surface for air.

Browse Okinawa snorkeling tours to Kerama or the Okinawa Blue Cave tours from Onna, and choose a free-cancellation slot if you can.

Kerama Islands day trip from Naha: ferry fares and logistics

All the ferries leave from Tomari Port in Naha, not the airport.

RouteTimeOne-way fare
Naha to Tokashiki (high-speed)About 35 to 40 min2,530 yen
Naha to Tokashiki (car ferry)About 70 min1,690 yen
Naha to Zamami (high-speed)About 50 to 70 min3,200 yen
Naha to Zamami (car ferry)About 2 hours2,150 yen

Reservations open about two months ahead, and the high-speed boats can sell out in peak summer. They are also the first to cancel in rough seas. The Zamami village website posts the day’s schedule each morning, so check it before you leave your hotel.

A simple 5-day plan

  1. Day 1: Land in Naha and sort your ferry tickets.
  2. Day 2: Drive or take a bus tour north for Churaumi Aquarium and Emerald Beach.
  3. Day 3: Kerama day trip to Tokashiki or Zamami.
  4. Day 4: Blue Cave snorkeling from Onna, then a resort pool or beach afternoon.
  5. Day 5: Buffer for weather, then souvenirs and the flight home.

Actionable tips

  • Book Kerama ferries or a tour first. Everything else bends around them.
  • Keep cash handy. An older listing says Emerald Beach doesn’t accept cards.
  • Check the ferry status by morning. Seas decide, not your plan.
  • Wear reef-safe sun protection and a rash guard. Most places rent masks, fins, and kids’ vests.
  • Stay inside the netted swim areas in summer.

Planning and booking

Book in this order: flights and visa, then Kerama ferries or tours, then hotels. For the aquarium, you can buy Churaumi tickets ahead. For hotels, compare Onna hotels against Naha options.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Okinawa for beaches and snorkeling?

Swimming and snorkeling are best from about April to October. Typhoon season runs roughly from June to October or November and peaks in August and September, so late October has lower storm risk but a shrinking swim window. Water cools to roughly 20 to 21°C in winter.

Do Filipinos need a visa for Okinawa?

Yes. Filipino passport holders need a Japan tourist visa. The Embassy of Japan in Manila says the temporary visitor visa for Philippine nationals stays free for stays up to 90 days. Package-tour travelers can use the eVisa since May 15, 2026; independent travelers apply through the Japan Visa Application Centre, which may charge service fees.

How do I get to the Kerama Islands from Naha?

Go to Tomari Port in Naha by monorail or taxi, then take a ferry. The high-speed boat to Tokashiki takes about 35 minutes and costs 2,530 yen one way. The high-speed boat to Zamami takes 50 to 70 minutes and costs 3,200 yen one way. Rough seas can cancel sailings.

Where can I snorkel with sea turtles in Okinawa?

Ama Beach on Zamami Island is known for turtles at high tide, and Kerama boat tours head to turtle spots. Tours from Miyako and Ishigaki also target them. Turtles are wild animals, so no operator can guarantee a sighting. Keep your distance and never touch them.

Is the Okinawa Blue Cave worth visiting?

For first-time snorkelers, usually yes. One Onna operator lists Blue Cave snorkeling from about 3,000 yen for beach entry up to 9,980 yen for boat or diving packages. Tours can change or cancel with sea conditions, so book a flexible date.

How many days do I need in Okinawa?

Plan four to five days: two on the main island, one Kerama day trip, and a spare day for weather. Add two to three days if you want to fly on to Miyako or Ishigaki. This is a planning rule of thumb, not an official figure.

Final thoughts

Okinawa rewards a plan that leaves room to move. Lock in the ferry and the visa, pick one of the best beaches in Okinawa that you really want, and let the weather decide the rest. If you’re planning from the Philippines, start with the visa and the Kerama boat, because those two can’t be improvised.

Tell me in the comments which island you’re picking.
